帶領孩子回顧祖父由誕生、結婚而至老死的一生，
藉由矗立家中的大時鐘娓娓敘述生命的悲喜與起落。
而老時鐘最後亦在老人百年後停擺，歌詞哀傷感人。
歌聲彷彿教我們重新省思秒分、光陰、歲月乃至生命的面貌，
童謠之所以常感人熱淚，正是因為碰觸了人的心裡那最單純，
也最容易隨著時光而模糊甚至閉鎖的部份。
而Henry Clay Work是在約1870年從美國到George Hotel住過。在那裡他知道了這對兄弟的故事，這給了他靈感。等到他回美國後，他開始寫一首關於這個大鐘的歌與故事。為了讓歌詞個人化，他便決定將歌詞中的人物寫成一個老人，並點出這個老人便是他的祖父，因而這首歌便取名為，祖父的時鐘。
